PS3 $600 ?

While the entire internet (at least the gaming part) continues to reel from Sony's $600 price announcement, we have to consider just how it came to be that the video game console leader decided to create such an expensive piece of machinery. There's no confusing this: Sony has known for some time that the PlayStation 3 would cost more than any game system before it (two jobs, remember?). But what corporate machinations influenced that decision?

Silo Tutorials

On this page you'll find a few basic Silo modelling tutorials showing various techniques/tricks that can be applied to a variety of situations. Some things that can be done quickly and easily with nurbs/solids can get you scratching your head a fair bit when it comes to doing the same thing in subdivision poly modelling; so hopefully one or two of these videos may help you out a bit. As and when time allows, I'll be updating this page with more tutorials. I may even record audio on them; though I'm not sure my heady mix of Dub' Irish / Bolton English accents will be easy to understand if you're not local to either place!

Facial Animation Rig for Delgo

I am Warren Grubb, Animation Director for Fathom Studios on the film Delgo. (click here for the trailer) When we R&D for the feature film Delgo, I was Technical Director and I knew we would need a facial rig for our characters that was more powerful and flexible than standard multi-targeted blendshape rigs. The solution we came up with, to describe it very simply, uses NURBS curves as influence objects on a poly mesh that is bound to control joints using smooth skining. We retained the ability to create blendshapes if necessary, but we gained, among other things, the ability for animators to create very subtle or extreme changes in expressiveness without having to send the character to a modeler for new target shapes. In most cases, this process is simple and fast enough that you can rig a head in a single day.

If you are running LW 7.5 or earlier you might want to get a hold of DI's Powertools and Edge Tools from Dstorm since they will help speed up the process, otherwise there is a little more manual labor involved, in that case take a look at this other tutorial:

Ila - Hi and thank you for giving me this opportunity. I am Ila Soleimani, a Tehran (Iran) born freelancing 3d artist, animator and TV Ad developer. It was PIXAR’s short film ‘Tin Toy’ which awakened my desire for being a 3d artist exactly in the year it won the Oscar award. Since then I follow my career experiencing with my beloved C64 home computer by making simple 2d flying logo animations and sprite designing. I got into the professional CGI market in 1993 while I was studying Graphic Designing at University. I started my first 3D experience with Autodesk 3dstudio 2. I am totally a self-taught in the field of CGI and 3D (The reason was very simple, there was no CG school back to early 90’). I went freelancing since I left Hoor Animation Studio in end of 1999.
